Overview
Versatile 16ch EEG is a semi-dry, water-based EEG device intended for research use. Sensors are moistened with tap water and mounted on a fabric cap, enabling recordings outside controlled laboratory settings. Data can be streamed wirelessly via Bluetooth and stored locally on a microSD card at the same time.
The system is not a medical device and is designed exclusively for research purposes.
Video Guide: Placement and Setup
EEG Channels and Layout
The system supports:
- 16 EEG channels
- Ground (GND)
- Reference (REF, ear clip)
Electrodes can be placed freely at labeled positions on the cap according to the international 10–20 and 10–10 systems. Sensor positions must be recorded and kept consistent for analysis.

Setup Summary
1. Preparing the Cap and Sensors
- Measure the participant’s head perimeter and select the correct cap size.
- Insert sensor sockets into the desired labeled positions on the cap.
- Insert EEG sensors firmly into the sockets, routing cables toward the back.
- Prepare sponges by soaking them fully in tap water.
- Roll each sponge and insert it into the inner holder of each sensor.
- Do not wet the EEG connector.
2. Power and Connectivity
- Turn on the amplifier using the power button.
- The Bluetooth LED flashes while connecting and stays on once paired.
- Low battery is indicated by the battery LED.
- Do not use the device while charging.
3. Recording and Storage
- Pair the device via Bluetooth (version 2.1 or higher).
- The Bluetooth name corresponds to the amplifier serial number.
- Data can be streamed to the computer and recorded to the microSD card simultaneously by enabling SD card recording in the software.
Placement Summary
- Measure the nasion–inion distance and locate Cz at the midpoint.
- Place the cap from the forehead backward, ensuring Cz is correctly positioned.
- Center the cap so lateral sensors are symmetrical.
- Attach and adjust the chinstrap.
- Organize cables toward the back of the head and secure them using the fastening band.
- Connect the EEG connector to the amplifier with the side labeled “This Side Up” facing upward until a double click is heard.
- Attach the amplifier to the Velcro patch at the back of the cap.
- Prepare and attach the reference clip with a damp sponge to the earlobe.
Recording and Signal Quality
- EEG signals are displayed in real time in the acquisition software.
- Sensor color indicates relative contact impedance.
- If signal quality is poor:
- Gently press the sensor against the scalp using small circular motions.
- Check sponge humidity and re-dampen if necessary.
- Wait a few seconds after each adjustment for stabilization.
Battery and Power Handling
- Disconnect the charger once the battery is fully charged.
- Do not store the device for long periods with the battery at 100% charge.
- Store the system in a dry environment between 5 °C and 40 °C.
- Use only the charger provided by Bitbrain (maximum 1 A).
Cleaning and Maintenance
- Remove electrodes and sponges before cleaning the cap.
- Discard sponges after each use for hygiene reasons.
- Clean the cap after each session using slightly warm water and mild detergent.
- Disinfect the cap using a validated disinfecting solution as specified in the user guide.
- Do not use abrasive or strong disinfectants.
- Store caps and electrodes in a dry place when not in use.
