Artinis OctaMon fNIRS

The Artinis OctaMon is a completely wearable, 8-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system designed for non-invasive monitoring of brain oxygenation. It is optimized for prefrontal measurements and supports mobile data acquisition both inside and outside laboratory environments.

Overview

OctaMon is a compact, portable fNIRS device based on continuous-wave near-infrared spectroscopy. It measures relative changes in oxyhemoglobin (O₂Hb), deoxyhemoglobin (HHb), and total hemoglobin (tHb) from cortical tissue. The system is designed for minimal setup time and can be used during movement, including walking or running.

Data can be recorded wirelessly via Bluetooth or stored offline, and the system integrates with Artinis software for acquisition and analysis.

Measurement Principles

  • Technology: Continuous-wave near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)
  • Model: Modified Beer–Lambert law
  • Measures:
  • Oxyhemoglobin (O₂Hb)
  • Deoxyhemoglobin (HHb)
  • Total hemoglobin (tHb)

Measurements represent relative concentration changes and are suitable for functional and physiological research.

Channels and Optodes

  • Number of channels: 8
  • Light sources: 8 LEDs, each with two wavelengths
  • Detectors: Photodiodes with proprietary ambient light protection
  • Wavelengths: 760 nm and 850 nm (other wavelengths possible)
  • Optode distance: 35 mm

The standard OctaMon configuration is optimized for prefrontal cortex measurements using a comfortable headband with flat optodes.

Data Acquisition and Connectivity

  • Recording modes:
  • Live streaming via Bluetooth
  • Offline recording
  • Wireless range: up to approximately 100 m (line of sight, depending on environment)
  • Sample rate: 50 Hz
  • Indicators:
  • Battery status
  • Bluetooth connection

Multiple OctaMon devices can be used simultaneously for hyperscanning, with synchronized data streams supported by the software.

Software

All OctaMon systems are bundled with OxySoft, Artinis’ data acquisition and analysis software, which provides:

  • Real-time calculation of O₂Hb, HHb, tHb, and TSI
  • Data collection, storage, and visualization
  • Support for synchronized multi-device recordings

An additional mobile analysis option is available via the OxyLite app for Android.

Supported operating systems: - Windows 10

Multimodal Compatibility

OctaMon can be combined with other measurement techniques, including:

  • EEG
  • EMG
  • Transcranial stimulation (tCS)

The system is designed to avoid electromagnetic interference with these modalities.

Power and Physical Characteristics

  • Battery life: up to 6 hours with one interchangeable rechargeable battery
  • Total weight: 230 g (including battery)
  • Battery housing dimensions: 84 × 54 × 20 mm
  • Cable length: 1.3 m
  • Headband sizes:
  • XS (OctaMon Mini, 48–50 cm)
  • S (52 cm)
  • M (56 cm)
  • L (60 cm)
  • Operating temperature: 10 °C to 35 °C
